Minor delays lead to Peninsula tunnel being unlit

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - MOTORISTS using the tunnel at Timothy Hill, South East Peninsula, would have to wait a little while longer for it to be completely lit, as it has been hit with another delay.

The tunnel, since its May 2016 opening, has been hit with a number of lighting delays but work to address those issues commenced again in January 2017.

According to Minister of Public Infrastructure the Hon. Ian Liburd, the lighting project has not gone according to schedule, due to procurement challenges.

“We understand that the contractor has encountered some procurement issues… The consultant is on the ground, and I know there was a progress meeting today (Friday, May 9) and it is months behind schedule.”

The lighting project is being carried out in phases by New Generation Engineering.

Owner of New Generation Engineering, Nubian Greaux explained to WINN FM shortly after beginning the installation project that it entails them putting up the Unistrut system “which is the system being put in place to actually mount the lighting fixtures to the ceiling of the tunnel and that also entails installing the lighting panels and cables.”

Minister Liburd stated though, that back in January when the contractor was speaking with a local radio station, indicated that the project would have been completed by the end of the month.

“But it is still outstanding and we trust and hope that it would be done in short order.”

Asked for a date by which the project is expected to be completed – especially given the delays – Minister Liburd said he would not want to preempt anything, but prefers to wait until he is certain that all the necessary lighting fixtures were loading onto a vessels to be shipped to St. Kitts.
