Woman dies in Sandy Point house fire

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A Sandy Point woman lost her life this evening (Mar. 14) in a fire which engulfed the house which she reportedly shared with her boyfriend.

Individuals in the Farm Site community flocked to the area when it was realized that the house was on fire.

Fire Chief Everette O’Garro told this publication that officers at the Sandy Point Fire Station responded to the call at about 7:15 p.m. and met the wooden house ablaze.

He said the dwelling space was occupied by 69-year-old Vance Browne and 45-year-old Hyacinth ‘Poodle’ Williams.

He also indicated that according to information he received, a neighbour claimed to have pulled Browne out of the house but was unable to get to Williams.

SKNVibes understands that while the fire was being extinguished, Browne continuously bemoaned the fact that his girlfriend was inside the burning house.

The fire officers were able to extinguish the fire after which, Williams’ lifeless body was discovered in an area of the house believed to have been used as a bedroom.

Fire Chief O’Garro explained that, according to information he gathered, Browne – who appeared to be in an inebriated state - said that the couple was using a candle which fell over on the bed, causing it and the clothes which were on it, to ignite.

SKNVibes understands that members of Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force attended to the scene to conduct preliminary investigations.

The undertaker was called to the area to remove Williams’ remains.

This – according to Chief O’Garro – is the first death caused by fire to have occurred in St. Kitts and Nevis within the last five years.
