Gov’t about to undertake feasibility study for Old Road Bay Project

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Old Road Bay project to prevent rocks from falling onto the roadway and threatening the lives of motorists, is moving into the feasibility study phase.

This disclosure came from the Minister of Public Infrastructure, the Hon. Ian “Patches” Liburd, who gave a recent brief update on the project to SKNVibes.

“We have just received a proposal in terms of the options and we are going to be doing the feasibility study, which is the geology studies to look at it.”

Over the years, motorists have expressed concerns about their safety when traversing that area during or after heavy rainfall, as the slope area along Old Road Bay is prone to erosion.

The government, in the 2017 Budget, had made consideration for work to be carried out to rectify the problem.

Before the budget presentation last year however, Minister Liburd told reporters that the government was considering three options to remedy the problem namely: partially benching the area; going over the hill and carry out work; or reclaiming some land from the sea.

The latter two, Liburd had indicated, were very expensive ventures.

Corrective work to that area forms part of the Public Infrastructure Ministry's overall development of roads and other infrastructure on the island.

In a recent interview, Liburd indicated that his government would also be taking into consideration new measures to minimise the impact of traffic accidents which take place along Old Road Bay and result in these vehicles being deposited in the sea.

He noted that the Ministry would also be looking at ways to minimise speeding along that stretch of road.

In July 2016, two individuals escaped major injuries after their vehicle ran off the road.
