BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - FOLLOWING what has been described as a terror attack on London yesterday (Mar. 22), where at least four persons have been confirmed dead and approximately 29 injured in a knife and car attack, Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy has offered condolences.

The incident, which took place yesterday afternoon outside the Parliament, saw a lone perpetrator driving in a zigzag manner, ramming pedestrians as they walked in downtown London.

According to media reports, the man, who is yet to be identified, later took out a knife and ran into the compound of the Parliament, and stabbed an officer who later succumbed to his injuries.

The knife-wielding man was later shot by police and reportedly died on the spot.

In a statement released today, Dr. Harris said, “The Governments and people of CARICOM and the OECS extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved families and friends of the persons who were killed in a car attack on Westminster Bridge, and to the bereaved family and friends of the police officer who was killed in a knife attack outside the Parliament.  We pray for all of them, as well as for the injured and their loved ones.”

With the nation picking up the pieces from the incident, the names and nationality of those who died were being released today.

According to information coming out of the United Kingdom, one of those who died is said to be an American tourist.

Dr. Harris, upon learning of the incident, added that “It is in these agonizing moments that we not only grasp the frailty and fragility of life, but we also hold firm to our resolve as responsible and compassionate members of the international community to stand up to evil and support our brothers and sisters at home and around the world wherever and whenever it occurs.

“As the authorities investigate whether or not today’s carnage was a terror attack, we join with Britain’s Prime Minister, the Honourable Theresa May, in commending the exceptional bravery of the police and security services who work valiantly and tirelessly so that freedom can reign throughout the world, enabling our governments, nations and peoples to build peaceful societies for humanity and posterity,”

In condemning the attack, the Federation’s political leader pledged the country’s support to the people of Britain during the difficult time “as the international community coalesces around it to send the strong message that terror cannot, will not, and must not prevail”.

This is the first major terror attack in that country since the bomb blast of 2005.
