More than 100 ‘PB’ registration numbers issued in two weeks

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – JUST about two weeks after the addition of the ‘PB’ index for registration numbers of privately-owned vehicles, and more than 100 have already been issued.

The announcement of the application of the new index was made about two and a half weeks ago via a notice from the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force. And it indicated that, “Due to the steady increase in demand for new vehicle registration numbers, it has become necessary for new registration indexes to be introduced, to keep pace with the demands.”

And as such, the index ‘PB’ was added to the existing ‘P’ and ‘PA’ indices.

District ‘A’ Commander Superintendent Cromwell Henry recently told SKNVibes that the demand is such that more than 100 registration numbers with the index ‘PB’ have already been distributed.

“That is the pace at which vehicles are being registered and it is little more than two weeks now. So that is how high the demand for new numbers is.”

Approval was also given for the index ‘G’ to be used for government-owned vehicles.

This means that the existing registration numbers on all such vehicles would be removed and a fresh number, prefaced by the letter ‘G’, would be assigned to each one.

Superintendent Henry informed that this process began with the Ministry of National Security, particularly the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force.

“The transition of license plates for government vehicles from ‘P’ and ‘PA’ to ‘G’ is progressing smoothly. We are doing it by Ministry. It is not going to be a wholesale one-time thing…We started with the Police Department. You would notice that the police vehicles, a good number of them, have already been changed over.

“So we are on the Ministry of National Security right now.”

Notwithstanding, Superintendent Henry said if there are vehicles added to the government’s fleet, they would be issued a ‘G’ registration number, regardless of which ministry or department it is attached to.

The ‘PB’ registration numbers, just like the ‘Ps’ and ‘PAs’, would be displayed in white lettering against a black background and the ‘G’ registration numbers would be displayed in black lettering against a white background.

Those registration numbers removed from the government’s fleet would be available for reassignment to privately-owned vehicles.
