24 April 2017 -- On Monday, 24th April 2017, His Excellency Sir Elliott Belgrave, GCMG, KA, Governor General of Barbados, made a presentation to the four Barbadians who are winners of the prestigious award, The Queen’s Young Leaders Award. The four Awardees are Donnya Piggott, founder of The Association of Barbados Gays, Lesbians and All-Sexuals Against Discrimination (B-GLAD), Firhaana Bulbulia founder of the Barbados Association of Muslim Ladies, Shamelle Rice founder of Jabez House, and Mrs. Jamilla Sealy, Regional Chairperson of the Caribbean Youth Environmental Network (CYEN).
The presentation at Government House was witnessed by Chairperson of the Royal Commonwealth Society, Barbados Branch, Mrs. Cheryll Sealy Belle, as well as other members of the Society, and by His Excellency Guy Hewitt, High Commissioner of Barbados to the United Kingdom.
In 2014, The Queen’s Young Leaders Programme was launched in honour of Her Majesty The Queen’s 60 years of service to the Commonwealth. The Programme is for five (5) years only, from 2014 to 2018, and sixty (60) winners are selected each year. By the end of The Queen’s Young Leaders Programme in 2018, there will be only 300 winners from across the 52 countries of the Commonwealth. Of the tens of thousands of young persons proposed for the award, it is remarkable that Barbados has produced four winners: Donnya Piggott in 2015, Firhaana Bulbulia and Shamelle Rice in 2016 and Jamilla Sealy in 2017.
During the presentation, Chairperson of the Royal Commonwealth Society, Barbados Branch Mrs. Cheryll Sealy Belle, said “The Barbados Branch of the Royal Commonwealth Society is indeed happy that these young Barbadians stood out amongst the Commonwealth Countries to the extent of their recognition for this prestigious award. They have made Barbados and the Commonwealth Caribbean proud."
Winners of the prestigious Award receive a package of training, mentoring and networking, including a one-week residential programme in the UK during which they will receive their Awards from Her Majesty The Queen in a special ceremony. With this support, Award winners will be expected to continue and develop the work they are already doing in their communities, and to be a part of the Queen’s Young Leaders community, a network of influential young change-makers.
