TRIBUTE TO WASHINGTON (WASHIE) ARCHIBALD
I sincerely hope that this becomes the best poem that I ever wrote,
Because it’s for a man, now departed, that did his best to promote
The ordinary man in this country, to positions of prominence,
Positions of authority, positions of power and great influence.
I am just one person, whom he called, on that unforgettable day;
He had some favourite questions before the records of his mind would play:
Where are you from? Where do you reside? Who are your parents?
And if any connections were made, you would get clearance.
I am just one person, with whom a connection was made -
He remembered, the big fight - The records of his memory played.
The big fight was between Mr. Archibald and my Grandfather;
I listened, but I don’t remember who got hit harder…
This was the beginning of a special mentorship,
From a person who was au fait with positions of leadership.
I am just one person, like many of you here today,
Who can claim wisdom, from listening to the things that he had to say.
I am proud to be one person, joined with many at this time,
For the noble purpose of honouring Washie, in tributes, in song and in rhyme -
And now, we have become one people, to carry on the torch of his legacy,
Well taught from our mentor, a soldier who fought for democracy.
