Tropical Storm Don to hit Southern Caribbean

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

    LIAT reports flight cancellations

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE first major storm to hit the Caribbean this hurricane season, Tropical Storm Don, is expected to dump large amounts of rain on several islands in the Southern Caribbean.

According to morning (Jul. 18) reports from the National Hurricane Center, the Tropical Storm is located 155 miles South East of Barbados and 255 miles East of Grenada.

It has maximum sustained winds of up to 40 miles per hours and its present movement is West or 275 degrees at 20 miles per hour.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in an advisory this morning, indicated that Tropical Storm Don is well Southeast of St. Kitts and Nevis and is expected to continue westerly.

“On the forecasted track, it poses no threat to our Federation. There is a tropical wave that has a chance for development, located further east in the Atlantic. This too based on the early projection is expected to pass to the northeast of the Federation. We will continue to monitor this disturbance and will make the necessary updates in future releases,” the advisory read.

However, air travel to the Southern Caribbean has been disrupted as LIAT had issued a notice about flight cancellations.

According to LIAT, it has cancelled approximately 20 flights in the Southern Caribbean.

In a statement today, the airline indicated that it continues to monitor Tropical Storm Don which is affecting operations in the southern Caribbean. However, operations in the northern part of the network have not been affected.

The troubled airline is hopeful that it would continue to operate as scheduled.
