BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – DESPITE home support, the Leeward Islands could not stave off a 63-run defeat at the hands of Guyana during their first round match in the 2017 Regional Under-19 Three-Day Competition played at the Verchild’s Playfield.

Winning the toss and electing to bat on the opening day (Jul. 24), Guyana struggled but posted a competitive 220 all out, with Kian Pemberton and Zawandi White being the chief destroyers for the home side.

However, a weak batting performance from the Leeward Islands saw them being bowled out on the second day for a paltry 100, with Guyana’s Ronaldo Ali Mohamed snagging 5 for 11.

With a lead of 120, the young Guyanese batsmen attack in their second innings and retired their score on 176/6 with a lead of 292.

The Leeward Islands team, which came into the tournament with limited practice sessions, put up a brilliant batting effort but Guyana’s Ashmead Nedd (4 for 3) and Richie Looknauth (3 for 58) ensured that their team would leave with full points.

They bowled the host out for 229 with Dimitri Adams stroking 59 runs from 70 balls consisting of 12 fours, while Javani Tyson top scored with 65 runs from 94 deliveries.

Over at the Conaree Ground, Trinidad and Tobago brushed aside the Windward Islands by 120 runs in their encounter.

Set 187 for victory, the islanders seemed set for victory early in the innings but the T&T bowlers stifled the batsmen before ripping the team apart for 167.

Justyn Gangoo and Navin Bidaisee were the pick of the bowlers, both of whom grabbed four wickets in the second innings, as they too took full points from the game.

Batting first on the opening on the opening day after being inserted by Windward Islands, they were dismissed for 233 in 64 over.

Windward Islands batsmen gave up first innings points as they were dismissed for 153 runs.

Meanwhile, the action in St. Paul’s between Barbados and Jamaica produced the most excitement, with the latter walking away with a one wicket victory.

Scores: Barbados 192 all out and 133 all out, and Jamaica 179 all out and 148 for 9.

Action in the second round is slated for July 28-30, when Guyana will battle against Trinidad and Tobago at the St. Paul’s Ground, Jamaica will be playing against the Windward Islands at Verchild’s Playfield, and over in Molineaux Leeward Islands will be going up against Barbados.
