Basseterre opens for business as Irma heads to Florida

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Federation is slowly returning to a state of normalcy after the passage of Hurricane Irma, which battered several islands in the Leeward Chain.

A number of businesses opened their doors and resumed operations this morning (Sept. 7), with many others remaining closed due to the impending threat by Hurricane Jose – which developed during Irma’s destructive rampage in the Caribbean.

Commercial banks were fully operational when SKNVibes visited them this morning, while some of the supermarkets have opened for business.

Several government offices were also operational, while Government Headquarters was still boarded-up.

Though there were downed trees and power lines as well as roofs blown off from dwelling houses in some areas, there was no loss of life or major damage recorded from the passage of the Category 5 Hurricane in the Federation.

Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Shawn Richards, who heads the local Mitigation Committee, had given the “all clear” signal yesterday for people to venture out and resume their daily operations.

Manager of the RLB International Airport, Ellsworth Warner told SKNVibes News that the facility would be opened from noon today and a few LIAT flights are expected to arrive.

Unlike the other islands, the local airport “only received minor damage”, accords to Warner.

He however pointed out that American Airlines has cancelled flights to and from St. Kitts and Nevis as well as the entire Caribbean region.
