SKELEC working feverishly to restore power

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE St. Kitts Electrical Company (SKELEC) is working around the clock to have power fully restored to those sections of St. Kitts that are without.

Residents have taken to social media to voice their displeasure at the lack of  electricity supply - for some prior to Hurricane Irma and others after it passed – to their homes.

SKELEC’s Public Relations Officer, Gawain Fraites told SKNVibes News today (Sept. 7) that their technicians are out in the field working around the clock to have power restored to those areas currently affected.

According to Fraites, SKELEC is working in a systematic way to restore power to the affect areas.

The Cayon was the hardest hit area, he disclosed.

“Currently, we have crews working in each area of the island. On the Cayon side is where we would have had more damage to our infrastructure than any other place on island.

“On the Cayon side, we are restoring power to Cayon, to Lodge – we are doing it by the major substations. We are doing the major substations from Cayon to Lodge, from Saddlers to St. Paul’s/Newton Ground”.

Though it may sound difficult for persons to understand, Fraites emphasized that it is being done to protect equipment and also to ensure that they find the source of the power outage.

“On the other side of the island, we have power up to Trinity, so we are starting from Challengers, where we are restoring power from Halfway Tree to Sandy Point.

“What we are doing is repairing first then we are restoring because we can’t restore then repair.  We have a lot of lines down and we have to make sure that we have to ensure that the lines that we have down are isolated, in that the power is off in them before we can repair.

“What we are doing right now is collecting all the information from social media and putting them together and send them to the technicians so they can go out to the area and fix the power.”

Fraites indicated that they are working to have all affected areas fully powered by tomorrow, or at the latest Saturday morning.
