Latin Festival to donate proceeds to hurricane-affected islands

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ORGANIZERS of the St. Kitts Latin Festival have disclosed that they would be donating 50% of the general admission ticket sales towards assisting citizens and residents of Dominica and Puerto Rico in their recovery efforts.

The announcement was made last evening (Sept. 28) at the Majitos Bar on Port Zante, which played host to the launching of the 2017 Puerto Rico edition.

It was pointed out at the ceremony that the festival stands in unity with those affected by the storms.

Chairperson of the Festival, Jose Rosa, who addressed the gathering, stated that they have found a way to assist people in Puerto Rico and other islands who were affected by the passage of Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

He explained that his heart goes out to those affected by the hurricanes and the deadly earthquakes in Mexico.

Those life-changing events have pushed the Chairman and the committee to donate 50% of the ticket sales to a Latin Festival Relief Fund.

“This money would be directed to an institution in each country, or through the Red Cross to better deliver the help. We would employ the relevant logistics and we would let the people be aware of this institution that will manage the fund,” Rosa said.

Dominica and Puerto Rico are two in a number of islands that were decimated by the passage of hurricanes.

The eye of Hurricane Maria passed over Dominica, “bringing the island to its knees”, leaving at least 27 people dead and many more missing.

Puerto Rico sustained major damage like Dominica and many people are reported to still be trapped in their homes, as roadways have been blocked by fallen trees.

The island is said to be on edge as a dam is expected to be breached, threatening major flooding in some areas.

Meanwhile, this year’s Latin Festival will be held on October 22 at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort.

According to the Committee, Reggaeton performers Jowell and Randy, Salsa Band Pirulo y la Tribu, Royaltiez Band and DJ Wett Dutt are slated to perform at the event.

A number of fringe activities will be held prior to the mega event.
