GIS, 17 November 2017 - Plans to rehabilitate the destroyed coastal road in Cappoon’s Bay and Carrot Bay are underway.

Government officials from the Ministry of Communications along with the Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Mark Vanterpool and First District Representative and Leader of the Opposition, Honourable Andrew Fahie met on November 10 to discuss solutions for fixing the road as well as analyzing alternative routes.

Honourable Vanterpool said, “We have seen unprecedented damages to our road network throughout the Territory and this has created a situation where we need to implement a new road rehabilitation strategy.”

He added, “The Public Works Department and contractors from the First District have been engaged to implement a temporary solution to the road from Sebastian’s at Little Apple Bay and onward to Carrot Bay.”

This temporary bypass road will accommodate traffic while repair work is being carried out on the coastal road. The coastal road, which was severely damaged due to the storm surge of Hurricane Irma, may be replaced with an alternate route.

Deputy Director at the Public Works Department, Mr. Navarro Donovan said, “In the long term, the Public Works Departments is evaluating road improvement options. These options include revetment rehabilitation as well as the possible acquisition of the land parallel to the existing road to construct a permanent road.” To view the interview with the Deputy Director on November 8 about the Cappoon’s Bay road visit the Government’s Facebook page, username @BVIGovernment.

Moving forward the Ministry intends to install appropriate drainage in areas where the road was completely destroyed, in order to reduce further erosion.

The Ministry of Communications and Works is appealing to the public to exercise due care and attention while driving on road as all efforts are being made to restore the road network throughout the Territory.
