Annual Taiwanese Scholarship Ceremony Confers US $100, 000 to the Federation’s Youth

Depicts School’s representatives, Minister Richards and Ambassador Chiou
By: EMU, Press Release

(EMU) – St. Kitts, November, 22, 2017: The Embassy of The Republic of China on Taiwan (ROC) donated USD, One Hundred Thousand to the Ministry of Education on Wednesday 22nd November.

“Education is not just the right thing to do but a smart investment, it provides the keys for sustainable development of a country,” asserted Ambassador, His Excellency George Gow Wei Chiou as he addressed the gathering at the Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium.

He stated, “We recognize the high potential in the younger generation because no investment in the youth is too late and none is insignificant.  Not only are we providing scholarships for students but also supporting the professional development of teachers.”

Ambassador Chiou, who made the donation, announced that his Government strives to maintain great diplomatic relations and this donation is a way of demonstrating that commitment.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the students and the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Hon. Shawn Richards, enumerated the work they (ROC) are doing to alleviate some of the challenges being faced by many youths in the Federation.  He thanked the Ambassador and the Taiwanese Government for its continued support and assistance to the development of the Federations’ human resource.

Speaking to the students present, Minister Richards articulated his pleasure that they have not fallen victim to economic issues that are sometimes the reality of students that leads to the premature end of their school careers. “Today you are being placed in a better position; your parents are being assisted with your continued attendance at the various schools,” stated Minister Richards.

“The scholarships you are receiving today do not represent the gamut of assistance, especially in the field of education that Taiwan offers to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis. A few months ago a number of individuals received scholarships to pursue studies in Taiwan,” Hon. Richards stated.

He continued identifying the Ministries, of Health, National Security and Agriculture as recipients of the ROC on Taiwan’s constant generosity throughout the years. Minister Richards also divulged that another recent donation from the ROC to the Ministry of Education was a gift of some twenty-four laptops that would be distributed to the schools at a later date.

The Minister highlighted that this donation and diplomatic allies such as that which is experienced with the ROC, would greatly assist in the accomplishment of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number four (4), which speaks to life-long learning for all persons and education for all.

One hundred and seventy (170) students received the monetary scholarship this year at the ceremony, adding to the hundreds of citizens that been recipients in the past.
