PM Harris: St. Kitts-Nevis government has ‘every, every confidence’ in the management of National Bank

By: (PRESS SEC), Press Release

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, NOVEMBER 30th, 2017 (PRESS SEC) – Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris said yesterday, Wednesday, November 29th, 2017, that his Government has “every, every confidence” in the ability of St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank Limited’s management to minimize risk for the institution and achieve best results for the citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis.

“The reality is, the National Bank remains a bank of good standing.  It remains the largest indigenous bank [in the ECCU],” Prime Minister Harris said yesterday during his monthly press conference.

St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister and Minister of Finance is a member of the highest decision-making authority of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, the Monetary Council, which comprises eight Ministers of Finance, one from each member government in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU).

During another press conference held back on April 5th, 2017, the Honourable Prime Minister said, “For the last five years, the National Bank Group recorded the following profits: in 2016 – the best year – $28.4 million; in 2015, $25.8 million; in 2014, $25.3 million; in 2013, $22 million, and in 2012, $14 million.”

Speaking yesterday, Dr. Harris noted that, “It is the job of the management to manage the bank in the best interest of the entity and to bring value to the shareholder…the shareholder relies upon reports, and an independent audit report is one of the key pieces of information.”

The Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis further noted that, “The professional people, the independent people, whose job it is to make the assessment are prepared to say that the financial statements reflect fairly and truly the financial condition of the entity.”

Indeed, the Independent Auditors’ Report to the Shareholders of St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank Limited prepared by Grant Thornton in St. Kitts, a member firm of Grant Thornton International Ltd. (GTIL), and dated March 30th, 2017 states the following as its opinion:

“In our opinion, the consolidated financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank Limited as of June 30 2016, and its financial performance and its cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards.”
