A Family Reunion to Celebrate the Life of A Cayon Woman

Press Release

December 1st, 2017 -- An exciting Family Reunion is being planned for the week of Sunday December 24 to Saturday December 30, 2017 in celebration of the life of Esther Lillian Matilda Thompson-Kelly, also known as Aunty Esther of Cayon.

Aunty Esther or Mama as she’s affectionately known, celebrated her 92nd birthday on June 11th of this year. She was born in Cayon in 1925 and had a difficult but pleasant childhood. She grew up at a time when children had to make do with little.

Despite her challenges, she lived a content and happy life, and built a reputation that many admired and respected. She was also as generous as she was hard working.

Aunty Esther’s parents, Violet Percival and John Thompson raised 8 children, namely, James Liburd, Charles Liburd, David Moore, Samuel James, twin girls, Lydia and Ruth, Mary and Johnathan. For the most part, they worked in the sugar industry and at various jobs. Their given names was an indication that they grew up in a very religious home where all the children were loved.

Mary and Esther are the only two of their parents’ children that are still alive. Esther’s father John or Dada, was originally from Nevis but made his home in St. Kitts. He was known as Cayon’s Village Time Keeper as  he could tell what time of day it was just by looking at the position of the sun in the sky. In fact, everyone in the neighborhood relied on John to figure out the time of day. He would ring the bell in his yard morning, noon and night, pealing out the number of the hour with each passing hour.

Today, Aunty Esther resides in St. Thomas with her husband Gene Kelly. Despite residing abroad, Aunty Esther looks forward to returning to her beloved St. Kitts whenever she can. In celebration of her 92nd birthday milestone, her children Marjorie, Evander, Austin, Wesley, Nagreta, Veronica, Adlin, Daisy, Louvena, Mervin, Virginia, Gleneva, Casandra, and Carl, along with dozens of Grand-Children, Great Grandchildren and Great-Great Grand-Children plan to capture the true essence of Aunty Esther’s life and show their love and appreciation for her by coming together to share moments of reflection, laughter and fun, all the while making special memories.

Family members and well-wishers hope to commence the reunion events by attending a Church Service on Sunday December 24, 2017 to celebrate her life. They also plan to visit several historic sites on both St. Kitts and Nevis including Brimstone Hill and Bath Springs in Nevis. Plans are also in place to ride the Scenic Railway and to host a banquet at the Cayon Community Center.

An unknown author penned the quote, “Live your life and forget your age.” Aunty Esther has certainly lived by this creed. She understands the value of everyday that she is allowed to take another breath, and she’s eternally grateful for all who help care for her and keep her happy. For her, age is nothing but a number!

The Thompson/Kelly family is like branches on a tree; growing in different directions, yet the roots remain as one. Aunty Esther is a blessing to her family and a joy to be around. Her value to her community and family can never be truly measured.

The family of Esther Lillian Matilda Thompson-Kelly, appreciates all who have reached out and shared with her during this special year of celebration and look forward to an exciting and memorable week of celebration in December to honor their family’s Matriarch.
