Traffic lights to be turned on in two weeks

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Feb. 02.2018 – FOLLOWING another delay in the launching of the traffic/signal lights in Basseterre, Minister of Public Infrastructure, Ian Liburd has disclosed that they are expected to come on stream on February 12.

Addressing reporters yesterday, the Minister explained that the latest delay was due to the fact that Prime Minister, Dr. Timothy Harris, who has responsibility for switching on the lights was unavailable.

That announcement comes as the government was preparing to have the lights switched on by the end of the January.

The January date came after the lights missed one that was earmarked for December.

“We had to postpone the earlier date because the prime minister had to travel or have pending travels overseas. The markings will be completed, so the lights are ready to go.”

The lights according to the Minister are fully operational since they were tested last month.

The government attempted moved over the last few years to have traffic lights implemented to scientifically regulate traffic flow in Basseterre.

The government’s position was criticized by some in St. Kitts, who believe that there is no need to have the lights implement but rather make changes that will redirect traffic – thus making the traffic move smoothly.

But, Director of Public Works, Cromwell Williams believes that the implementation of the lights is a step forward in the Federation’s infrastructure development.

Speaking at the recent testing of the lights, Williams said that he is sure that in a short time, the general public will see the benefits of the lights in terms of the smooth and orderly flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
