BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Feb. 08.2018 – RESIDENTS of the government quarters in the Garden Housing complex have seen their sanctuary coming in for a $2 million renovation work.
The National Housing Corporation (NHC) last month embarked on an ambitious plan to renovate the entire 36 room complex and beautify the surroundings while installing a sewage system.
Minister of Housing, Hon. Eugene Hamilton and Executives from the NHC took a tour of the complex to see first hand the level of work undertaken.
Hamilton told SKNVibes News that the buildings in the complex were constructed sometime in the 1980’s, and between then to now there has been no major upgrades to the location.
He explained that he was troubled when coming to the shorelines of St. Kitts and having to see the buildings in a state of deterioration, emphasizing that cruise passengers would see the same problem.
“So, I am pleased that we were able to do some work on it before the third anniversary of Team Unity,” Hamilton stated.
Minister Hamilton pointed out that they would have installed cupboards; removed carpeting with tiled flooring; changed out bathrooms, amongst other necessary changes.
Giving a detailed description of some of the work untaken thus far, NHC’s General Manager, Elreter Simpson-Browne stated that they took out windows in order to upgrade the building, before moving to the inside.
“What really is taking up the money is the brand-new sewage plant that would be installed in a couple of weeks from now. For years we would have had so many complaints about that, and the Minister himself being the Minister of Health; that was something he wanted to ensure that he complete in his first term.”
Against that backdrop, she informed that they do not mind the spending, once the tenants are happy with what they have.
