GIS, 23 February 2018 - BVI Finance and other stakeholders will be hosting a Financial Services Opportunities Expo on March 22nd to match job seekers and entrepreneurs with industry professionals to help fill opportunities within the financial services sector. The expo is one of many projects being undertaken by the Committee to Revitalize Financial Services of the Virgin Islands, following the passage of Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

“The objective of the expo is to connect job-seekers and entrepreneurs with decision makers at financial services businesses, to help BVIslanders and others in our community access opportunities which exist in the sector,” said Meade Malone, the event’s chairman.

As the Virgin Islands continue its journey to recovery after the historic Category 5 hurricanes, the expo aims to help the islands rebuild by facilitating gainful employment. Commenting further, Malone said “We anticipate that the expo will open doors for participants seeking to prepare themselves for present and future opportunities and also serve as a marketplace where firms can connect with available talent as well as potential suppliers and service providers.”

The expo will allow entrepreneurs, private sector firms, service providers, suppliers and individuals seeking employment to come together and network. Before the expo, job seekers will have an opportunity to engage with prospective employers at a meet and greet, scheduled for March 1st.  At that event, they will also have a chance to hear directly from experienced professionals that have built a career working in the industry, as well as those that have provided services to facilitate the Territory’s most significant economic pillar.

Interim Executive Director of BVI Finance, Lorna Smith, O.B.E said that the expo would not be just another job fair. “We intend for this to be a meaningful opportunity for both persons seeking employment, as well as firms and entrepreneurs.  We have already gotten a list of vacant positions and will be actively working with firms to help them find the right talent to support their offices, and we are appealing to persons in the Territory to come out and participate in the events.”

Smith said her office has already contacted employment support services such as the Labour Department’s job placement office, private recruiters as well as individuals that were laid off after the hurricanes to ensure Virgin Islanders and other applicants are adequately prepared to represent themselves at the expo confidently. To pre-register for the expo, firms and interested job seekers may contact BVI Finance at events@bvifinance.vg.
