April 22, 2018/New York/CMM…. Team Jamaica Bickle (TJB) will have nurses in residence at the Team Hotel in Philadelphia and on-site at the Relays for its duration. The effort is to ensure that immediate care is available to athletes if needed (even for the mildest complaints) especially where a trip to the emergency room might not be necessary.
Nurses, Delores McGregor, MS, RN, CCRN and Sharon Thompson, RN, Nurse Anesthetist; will have the task of keeping watch over the athletes throughout their stay. While there have been no serious incidents around the teams over the years, there have been situations such as athletes forgetting their asthma medicine and the occasional headache or stomach ache. Having medical personnel on hand ensures that occurrences such as these are properly assessed by a professional. In the event further care is needed this will be expeditiously handled.
Nurse McGregor, who has over thirty years in the profession has a background in critical care and currently works as a nurse educator at Lenox Hill Hospital, a role she prides herself in. She is a PHD student at Pace University where she is also an adjunct professor.
Nurse McGregor is a longstanding volunteer with the organization having served at the Penn Relays as part of the medical team in the TJB village coordinated by the Jamaica nurses group of New York. She serves as one of the two member nurse trainers for the organization’s four-year ‘Defibrillator-to Schools,’ program and has trained close to 200 staff in the use of the emergency devices and first aid.
She’ll be ably assisted by her counterpart in the TJB Defibrillator training program, Nurse Sharon Thompson who has over 22 years experience as a nurse. She is trained to administer anesthesia in the OR (Operating Room) or in an office setting for Gastrointestinal Procedures such as Endoscopy and Colonoscopy. Nurse Thompson is a regular participant in medical missions to Jamaica and will undertake her first surgical mission at Princess Margaret Hospital in Morant Bay St. Thomas, immediately after the Penn Relays.
“It gives us peace of mind. We are always looking for ways to enhance the care we provide to our athletes, and ambassadors during their stay,” said Irwine Clare, CEO/Founder.
The organization is hosting teams from Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and St. Vincent and The Grenadines for the 124th staging of the Penn Relays, April 26-28.
