BVI, 5 June 2018 - Students across the Territory are invited to design creative posters to welcome home our BVI medalists at a parade to be held on Friday, June 15.

Students are encouraged to “Say it” on posters to honour local athletes Mr. Kyron McMaster, Mrs. Tahesia Harrigan-Scott, and Ms. Chantel Malone, for outstanding performances at the recently held Commonwealth Games.

Minister for Education and Culture, and Youth Affairs and Sports, Honourable Myron V. Walwyn, is encouraging all students from primary and secondary schools to participate in the ‘Say it on a poster’ initiative to welcome the athletes in the most meaningful manner.

Minister Walwyn stated, “The athletes whom we are honouring, are definitely deserving of these congratulatory events which are being planned.  It is also very important for students, who are the future of this country, to be participants in such events, and to also be able to know the athletes who are being honoured.  I encourage them to put their artistic talents to use and design many posters to let our athletes know how much we appreciate them.”

Meanwhile, Director of the Department of the Youth Affairs and Sports, and Chairman of the committee spearheading the celebratory event, Mrs. Brenda Lettsome-Tye said that this is an opportunity for students to participate in an event where they will learn and share Virgin Islands pride, as well as meet local athletes and become inspired to follow in similar footsteps.

Mrs. Lettsome-Tye said the parade and the display of the posters with special messages written from the heart of the students will make the honouree athletes feel appreciated and welcomed.

She added, “On the other hand, our students will have the opportunity to see these local icons, persons who they know, and will be motivated by their good example. I am certain that the parade will provide an atmosphere, filled with the right type of energy for everyone to enjoy and make this event a memorable one.”

The parade will commence from the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds at 2:00 p.m. and proceed to the Tortola Pier Park where the Celebration Ceremony will begin at 2:30 p.m.

Other events are being organised including a motorcade scheduled for Thursday, June 14 starting at 5:00 p.m. from the T.B. Lettsome International Airport, proceeding along the Fat Hogs Bay route, and ending at the Government Complex where residents will have an opportunity to interact and have photo sessions with the athletes.
