Premier Smith: BVI Asia Mission Very Productive

    BVI, 14 June 2018 - Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE continues to host mini conferences in Asia to promote the BVI’s traditional and new business and financial services offerings.

     

    The Premier said the BVI delegation completed its third mini conference with over 100 practitioners in attendance inclusive of BVI and China private sector.

    Premier Smith said topics covered at the conference held on June 12 were BVI Advantage, the opening of Bank of Asia in BVI, new BVI products such as Micro Business Companies Act, Limited Partnership Act and the BVI’s involvement in the Belt and Road Initiative.

    In reference to the other meetings,  the Premier said, “I am pleased that we have also had productive meetings with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Commerce and the China Friendship Association, all of whom welcomed the several developments in the BVI that will further the economic relationship between BVI and China.”

    Premier Smith and the BVI delegation met with the Chairman, CEO and senior officials of the largest small and medium sized organisation in Beijing known as CASME on June 13.  He said CASME and the government have had an ongoing working relationship for the past two years. 

    Premier Smith said, “This time I am pleased to let you know that we are very close to entering into a relationship with them for the development of a trading platform.”  He further added, “I am pleased that subject to compliance and other related arrangements, that Bank of Asia will also be involved in that relationship which combines the latest developments in FinTech with business development.”

    Premier Smith further stated that this in essence means the introduction of a new product and that he expects that new businesses will be incorporated.

    Premier Smith is leading a delegation from June 2 to17 to five cities in Asia to continue the promotion of traditional and new business and financial services offerings and to meet key government and industry stakeholders in the region.
