September 4th, 2018 -- The UK and the Organisation for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) are working together to help improve the Caribbean’s ability to respond to the use of chemicals as weapons by terrorists or non-state actors.
Between 28-30 August, the U.K. and OPCW held a workshop hosted by the Government of Barbados in Bridgetown with 12 Caribbean States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). The objective of the workshop was to provide a forum for local experts to share knowledge and discuss ways to improve the region’s ability to respond to chemical weapons attacks. Experts from Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Belize, Dominica, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, & Suriname attended, along with officials from CDEMA and CARICOM.
Barbados’ Minister of Environment and Natural Beautification, the Honourable Trevor Prescod, spoke at the opening ceremony. The Minister described the workshop as “timely and important” and spoke about the importance of the CWC’s goal of creating a world free of chemical weapons, along with the Barbados Government’s commitment to updating their Chemical Management Policy.
The British High Commissioner also welcomed the workshop. High Commissioner Mrs Janet Douglas said, “This workshop will help make the Caribbean more resilient and better able to collectively respond to a chemical weapons attack. It will also strengthen the chemical weapons convention and global opposition to the use of chemical weapons.”
