CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – AN evening explosion at the Medical University of the Americas in Nevis has resulted in two American students – ages 28 and 31 – sustaining major injuries.

According to reports, the incident took place shortly before 8:00 p.m. at one of the dorms at the institution, sparking a fire.

Fire Chief Everette O’Garro explained that they received a call that there was an explosion at the location, upon arrival at the scene officers saw fire emanating from one of the dorms.

He said the fire was located in building numbered three; and the firemen quickly sprang into action and extinguished the blaze which was confined to the one area.

According to the chief, preliminary investigations revealed that there was an explosion before the fire.

The explosion blew out the door to the dorm and shattered the glass windows, revealed O’Garro, resulting in two American students sustaining injuries.

Though the extent of the injures were not revealed, Nevis’ Premier Mark Brantley told the Nevis Island Assembly on Wednesday (Oct. 03) that he was at the hospital last evening and one of the two students was transported to the United States for treatment.

No official statement has been received from the university on the explosion.

Meanwhile, Alexis Jeffers, Deputy Premier, who is the Representative for St. James pointed out that it will be a long and difficult road ahead for the injured but wished them a speedy recovery.
