BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -- PRIME Minister Dr. Terrance Drew has sought to reassure the populace of St. Kitts and Nevis that his administration has the territory’s best interests regarding the proposed "CARICOM Free Movement."
Following the recently held Heads of Government Meeting in Georgetown, Guyana, regional leaders agreed to push forward with the implementation of the free movement initiative, which will entail the removal of the six-month maximum stay for those who sign on to the proposal.
Antigua and Barbuda, as well as the Bahamas, have both publicly indicated that they are opting out of the initiative. Since the public statements from leaders of the two territories, public criticisms have been leveled at PM Drew for not disclosing the Federation’s position.
Addressing the matter at his latest Round Table discussion with reporters, PM Drew explained, "Anything we do would be in the strategic interest of St. Kitts and Nevis."
He further emphasized, "Nothing we will do will be to the detriment of St. Kitts and Nevis."
Many citizens have expressed concerns over the possible impact the decision will have on local resources and infrastructure.
Dr. Drew stated that his government is still seeking more data and information on the topic of free movement, and the country’s concerns will be brought forward regarding how the proposed changes will affect St. Kitts and Nevis.
"However, it has to be done in a way where each country will benefit and not be placed in a worse position, so to speak, or in a position where citizens are not convinced that it's to the benefit of their country. Therefore, we are looking at it closely, and we are monitoring it," the prime minister stated.
Regional leaders initiated discussions on implementing regional free movement last year with the aim of having it in place by the end of March this year. Several meetings are scheduled in the coming days to focus on its implementation.
