BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -- THE historic TDC Interschool Championship began on Thursday (Mar. 14) at the Kim Collins Stadium, with institutions from Nevis leading after the first day.
Charlestown Secondary School dominated the field events, securing four gold medals. Gingerland Secondary School followed with three golds, while Washington Archibald High School and Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College tied for third with two golds each.
Day two is set to feature 10 events across multidisciplinary categories, including the Pentathlon and Heptathlon.
The TDC Championship is a prominent event on the scholastic calendar, drawing large crowds and fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie.
In her opening address, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Valencia Syder, emphasized the significance of the meet, highlighting its promotion of camaraderie, athleticism, and competitive spirit among youth.
"Sports continue to unite communities, inspire greatness, and shape futures. I commend all participating schools for their dedication and commitment to sports excellence," Syder remarked.
Expressing gratitude, the permanent secretary underscored the excellence that inspires all in the Federation to support sports. She affirmed her ministry's pride in supporting initiatives that promote physical activities and sporting events.
Delwayne Delaney, President of St. Kitts-Nevis Athletics, extended his best wishes to all athletes as they compete for glory for their respective institutions.
"I feel proud to know that we are hosting such an event under such circumstances…we have put in the hard work so that the championship could be of a high standard," Delaney remarked.
The president's comments come as the Championship is split across both St. Kitts and Nevis due to ongoing upgrades at the Kim Collins Stadium facility.
Delaney previously explained that the decision was made to ensure the safety of the athletes, with many of them set to compete at the CARIFTA Games in Grenada.
