Road Town, Tortola - After months of anticipation the Vehicle Licensing Department issued the Territory’s first set of customized plates last week.

The customization of licence plates came as a result of the implementation of the Road Traffic Regulation 2009.

“This is a historic moment that came about as one of the minister’s vision for traffic, which was approved by Cabinet,” Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Julian Fraser, RA told the Department of Information and Public Relations. “Never before in the history of the Virgin Islands has the law provided for the customization of licence plates,” he said.

“Persons can now order customized plates which can be done by submitting an application in writing to the Chief Licensing Officer,” Minister Fraser confirmed.

According to the Road Traffic Regulations 2009, customised motor vehicle registration plates shall not be issued if the alpha-numeric sequence requested spells an offensive word, depicts profanity or is a socially unacceptable word or abbreviation. All applications are subject to approval by the Minister for Communications and Works.

“We encourage the community to participate in this new development,” Minister Fraser said.

Professional plates are $400 and personalized plates are $1000. For more information contact the Vehicle Licensing Department at 468-4939.
