Sandy Point High School S.E.L.F Day

The Sandy Point High School celebrated Tuesday 8th April as S.E.L.F. (Student Educational learning Fund) Day. Other activities relating to an awareness of the Fund were held throughout the rest of the week.

The celebration was the brain child of Miss Rosemary Govia, a teacher who is presently pursuing the B.Ed in Educational Administration. These activities were organized as part of her practicum project which is a UWI course requirement.

On the first day the student council was engaged in selling tags to students and teachers.  This was done primarily to make students more aware and appreciative of the text books that are provided free of cost by the government.  Also, students from the different form levels were involved in the cleaning of the S.E.L.F. library and the textbooks.  ~~Adz:Right~~

Textbooks with torn covers were sent to the Industrial Art Department for teachers and students to fix while those with covers completely missing were taken to the Government printery to be covered. Moreover, the week culminated on Saturday when parents and other community individuals gave the room a face lift by painting it.

Miss Govia stated that the primary aim of the project is to improve the physical conditions of the library so that stakeholders – students, parents and teachers could be satisfied and comfortable when using the facility.

The project began in March and is expected to be completed at the end of April.  She further outlined that the project had three stages of which this was the second.  The first stage involved the removal of old wooden shutters and the installation of new sash hung glass windows while the final phase would see new bookshelves being placed in the room to hold the textbooks.

She also expressed thanks to the persons and business places who have contributed thus far to the project.  Special mention was made of Mr. Nicholas Brisbane who has been the main contributor towards the project.
