Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 29th, 2012 (SKNIS): The visit of the Earl and Countess of Wessex on Saturday (March 03) is touted as being a historic event in St. Kitts and Nevis that will inspire the Federation’s youth.
On Tuesday’s edition of Perspectives, member of the local organizing committee for the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations, Raphael Archibald recounted the 1953 visit of Princess Margaret. “It’s history,” he said. “It’s something that one remembers with pride and it is something that the young people will remember and can pass on to their children and grandchildren.”
The Royal Visit has already captured the imagination of about 20 young members of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force Band. On February 6, the band performed at a Beating of the Retreat Ceremony held on the Bay Road. It was explained at that time that the Band was not in ceremonial dress because most of the younger members did not have the appropriate uniforms.
Band Master Lieutenant Sylvester Charles noted that the special accommodation was made because of the enthusiasm demonstrated by the young people and it was evident during the ceremony. “They performed creditably. We were absolutely proud of them,” he revealed.
The young people now have the appropriate dress and are equally excited about the opportunity to provide musical accompaniment for the Guard of Honour that will be inspected by Their Royal Highnesses on Saturday. Lt. Charles explained that additional band practices have been scheduled and persons are also fine tuning their drill techniques.
The programme itself is “shaping up nicely.” The band is expected to perform favorites such as Men of Harlech and Our Director. Lt. Charles encouraged persons to come out and witness the ceremony to be held at Port Zante.
“The public can expect high quality music and enhanced performance in terms of the sound. With the addition of the youngsters it should be a more wholesome tone by the band,” Lt. Charles concluded.
