Rotary Club of St. Kitts RYLA Scholar Speaks

    Basseterre, St. Kitts February 29th, 2012  -  Mr. Shaquille Frederick, the Rotary Club of St. Kitts RYLA delegate, has showered praises on the business and professional organization for selecting him to participate in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Conference, held under the theme, “Our Youth - Today, Tomorrow and Beyond.”

     

    According to Frederick, “my participation and interaction with my Regional peers has allowed me to find my place in society. It has also taught me many valuable life lessons and encouraged me to reach out to the others, as I strive to a better leader and responsible citizen.”

     

    He further added that his involvement gave him a better understanding of some of the issues affecting young people (including financial management, character development, the community and its influence, conflict resolution, leadership, and Health (HIV/AIDS), as well as, the chance to present simple and practical solutions to help them.

     

    Apart from the training sessions, the young Kittitian also took part in a tree planting and building repainting exercise at the Dorothy Hopkin Centre, a Health Care facility for the Disabled, to officially bring the curtains down on the three-day event, organised by the Rotary Clubs of Grenada

     

    In 2010, the Rotary Club of St. Kitts jointly hosted the three (3) day Annual Youth Forum at the Robert Ross International University of Nursing.

    Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an international program that was created by Rotary International to encourage strong leadership in Youth. Young people chosen for their leadership potential attend an all-expenses-paid camp to gain life skills and enhance leadership skills through activities conducted in an atmosphere of trust and respect.

     

    Through training programme, RYLA participants develop personal and leadership skills, gain exposure to a variety of issues, exchange ideas with their peers from different cultural backgrounds, learn how to co-ordinate community service projects, discuss approaches to resolving social and professional conflicts, meet Rotary community leaders and learn about other Rotary programmes for young people while having fun, making new friends and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
