Inaugural History and Heritage Hunt a success!

Treasure Hunters and Volunteers
Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, March 8th 2012 - On Saturday 3rd March, 2012, the St. Kitts National Youth Parliament Association (SKNYPA) hosted the “History and Heritage Treasure Hunt” as one of the many activities scheduled by the Brimstone Hill Society in celebration of History and Heritage Week 2012.

Treasure hunters, organizers and volunteers were all excited to be a part of the first ever History and Heritage Hunt which would be centered on the week’s theme “Everyday Heroes”.

Eager treasure hunters arrived in teams of two ready to face the challenge set before them. Some individuals joined the hunt on short notice; simply because the dialogue and anticipation bubbling in the square caught their attention. Participants exclaimed with excitement as they found the tasks intriguing, some shuddered at the thought of the distance they had to travel and the brave hearts challenged their fellow hunters to a race to the finish.

At 3pm, when teams were registered, volunteers sent to their sites, and all clues were in place, the treasure hunt began.

The chair person of the Hunt’s Organizing Committee, Ms. Shauntel Liburd along with committee members then travelled to the McKnight Community centre where the hunt was scheduled to end and waited patiently for the first team to emerge from the distance.

The first place winners tore through the labyrinth set up across the streets of Basseterre. Running vigorously to the registration table, taking deep breaths to sustain themselves, team “Slushus” made up of Brian Brookes and Shanda Wilkinson became the first ever winners of the History and Heritage Hunt.

While observing the reaction of the team, it was realized that one of the two team members began the hunt in sneakers and returned in socks only. When asked about her shoes she replied, “I left them some place,” She shrugged and continued, “The clues! The clues!” This statement alone is a true testament of the determination that resulted in this team’s victory.

Less than twenty (20) minutes after the winners arrived, the second team sprinted towards the Community Centre. Team “Main Care”, Akeem Bacchus and Jabari Trotman was later to be trailed by the day’s third place finishers, Team “Jets”, Shontelle Wilkinson and Anicka Wilkinson. The site volunteers were then brought to the McKnight Community Centre and a prize giving ceremony was conducted.

Following the distribution of the prizes Mr. Larry Armony of the Brimstone Hill Society congratulated and thanked all participants as well as SKNYPA for the success of the event. He noted that, “With more planning and a continued partnership with SKNYPA, the hunt will continue to be an annual success.”

All prizes for the hunt were donated by the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, TDC Group of Companies and LIME.
