Press Release

Basketball City Basseterre St. Kitts,  1st October 2012  --  The excitement and action of the Digicel SKABA League 2012 continues this weekend with the introduction of the SKABA Super 8 Dwayne Sturge Memorial League.

The tournament is one of the many initiatives undertaken by the SKABA Management to keep fans satisfied with a steady diet of basketball and clubs with more opportunities to hone and develop their players and respective teams.

In addition, the tournament will act as a fund raiser to assist with our National Teams in their upcoming participation in various regional tournaments in Dominica and St. Maarten. The initiative also serves to give the Under 25 National team as much play time before they are scheduled to be showcased on the regional level.

Eight teams have been invited to participate in the inaugural tournament. The teams invited includes the Premier division final four of Champions the Horsfords NEWTOWN Ghetto Roots, LIME Fig Tree Dirt Revelers, Ghaut Bucs and the Challengers Exodus. Joining the elite 4 will be the top two teams from the “A” Division in Champions the National Bank Bird Rock Uprisers and runners-up the McKnight Trotters. Rounding out the Super 8 will be the Nevis Champions the Cotton Ground Rebels and the National Under 25 team.

Dwayne Sturge was a former SKABA Player and Administrator as well as former Coach of the Horsford's Newtown Ghetto Roots who passed away suddenly at the age of 37 last December.

According to Wallis Wilkin , team Manager and Coach of the Ghetto Roots ,  the teams recent SKABA Championship victory was also dedicated to the memory of Sturge .

The tournament is scheduled to commence on Thursday 4th October 2012 at Basketball City at 6:30 p.m.
