BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: The St. Kitts Nevis Students Association of UWI, Cave Hill, held its Annual Farewell and Awards Dinner on Saturday 9th April, 2005. The gala, themed Beyond Boundaries, was in honour of the 16 Kittitian and Nevisian students expected to graduate from Cave Hill after 2004-2005 academic year. Specially invited guests who gave words of encouragement to all students present were the Deputy Prime Minister the Hon. Sam Condor and the Premier of Nevis the Hon. Vance Amory, the two ministers responsible for education in the Federation.

The featured speaker for the evening was attorney at law and former St. Kitts and Nevis Attorney General, Tapley Seaton QC. Mr. Seaton not only shared two humorous memories from his own spell at Cave Hill as a law student, but identified historical boundaries that were passed by Kittitians and Nevisians as a people, from the Emancipation of slaves in 1834, through Statehood in the 1960s and beyond Independence in 1983. He stressed the need for the expansion of thinking beyond boundaries, for the betterment of our country and the wider region irrespective of political differences and to eschew self doubt.

Mr. Francis Woody Blackman, a Barbadian by birth and former Head Master of the St. Kitts Nevis Grammar School, was inducted as an honourary SKNSA member and acknowledged for his contributions to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis, particularly in the field of education. Other special awards given at the event were given to Ron Daniel and Jihan Williams, former SKNSA president and vice president respectively, for their contributions to the association over their three years at Cave Hill. Second Year law student Shamara Morton, former secretary and M.C. for the evening received an award for her hard work over the past year. In addition to the 16 final year Kittitians and Nevisians who were being honoured, were five honourary SKNSA members from Dominica, Barbados, Trinidad and The Virgin Islands. These persons, although not born in St. Kitts or Nevis, have contributed significantly to SKNSA over the past three years, participating in SKNSA events like members.

President Jonel Powell in his address acknowledged SKNSA students who were recently given awards for academic excellence by the University of the West Indies, and spoke of the success of the association over the past school year under the leadership of his predecessor, Ron Daniel. He also spoke of plans that his executive has for the association in the upcoming academic year.

The evenings program began with the national anthem of St. Kitts and Nevis which was led by Teshri John, followed by words of prayer delivered by Christopher Archibald. Latoya Lindsay performed a monologue and Pauline Slack sang a song written by Kittitian, Grace Laplace. Crios Freeman gave said a special thank you to Messrs. Condor, Amory and Seaton, and the official vote of thanks was given by SKNSA Vice President, Petal Parry.

After the official ceremony, was a scrumptious dinner, followed by an opportunity for the invited guests and students to mingle, pose for photographs and some even used the opportunity to do a little dancing.
