Blue House set the pace at Cayon Primary Sports Day

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - CAYON Primary School’s Sports Day showed a great deal of promise for the institution’s athletes as they head toward next month’s RAMS Inter-Primary School Championships to defend their title.

The athletes came out on Wednesday (Mar. 13) at the St. Mary’s Park in Cayon and showcased to the public the abilities and potentials they possess to defend their title, as the four houses battled for supremacy.

Blue House was however adjudged Champions as its athletes displayed consistent performances to blow away the other houses and scoring 241 points in the process. These points, coupled with those earlier earned at the Heats and Pre-Sports events gave the house a total of 735.

Red House came in second with 702 points; 187 at the Sports Day and 515 in the Heats and Pre-Sports events.

For the most part of the day, Red House had trailed Green House; but in the closing stages its athletes dominated the relays, narrowly beating their rivals into the third spot by two points.

Gold House brought up the rear with 642 points; 162 and 480 at the Sports Day and Heats/Pre-Sports events respectively.

Dequana Mc Sheen of Red House maintained her dominance in the sprints within her age group in similar fashion displayed at last year’s RAMS Inter-Primary Championships.

There was also a bit of humour during the Under 7 Girls 4x50 metre Relay when Red House was lagging in the race and the anchor took the baton from a Blue House athlete and dashed to the finish line.

When the spectators thought they had seen it all, a repeat came in the Under 7 Boys 4x50 metre Relay when a Red House athlete took the baton from a Blue House athlete and in turn gave it back to another Blue House athlete.

There was however a rerun of the two Relays and the girls from Blue House won the race, while Green House first breasted the tape for the boys.

Judging from the performances witnessed at the day’s event, many spectators are of the view that the athletes would be a force to reckon with at the RAMS Inter-Primary School Championships which will be held at the Silver Jubilee Stadium.

In a close call in 2012, Cayon Primary School was successful in pulling out all stops to emerge winners of the Championships.

That meet concluded with Cayon and Sandy Point Primary Schools each gaining eight gold medals. However, in such circumstances, the winner would be the school with the most silver medals.

But then again, both schools had seven silver medals under their belts and the tie-breaker came with the declaration of bronze medals. Cayon’s tally was seven as against Sandy Point’s two.
