BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A blistering 10-second by Antoine Adams and Jason Rogers topped yesterday’s (Jun. 16) excitement in the National Invitational and Club Championships held at the Silver Jubilee Stadium.
The Kittitian sprint aces clocked 10:00 seconds in the 100m Men’s Senior (open) ahead of Brijesh Lawrence, Allistar Clarke and Delwayne Delaney in what was most certainly the most exciting race of the afternoon.
However, after waiting for some 15 minutes for the official results, spectators were divided as to who they felt won the race.
Rogers got out to a lightening start and seemingly running away with the race, but a strong finish by Antoine Adams clipped Rogers at the line to successfully defend his 100 metre title.
According to the official results, the two were separated by a third decimal point with Adams recording 10:001 seconds and Rogers 10:002, both performing ‘A’ qualifiers for the 2013 IAAF World Championships.
Earlier in the day, Adams also tasted success as he won the Men’s 200 metres in a time of 20:25 seconds ahead of Brijesh Lawrence who ran 20:94.
Another top performer was Omhunique Browne, an American-born sprinter, who won the Female 100 and 200 metres events, in which she distanced herself from all competitors in both races.
Browne had earlier declared her intention to represent the twin-island Federation in which her father was born.
Two national records were broken in the Male and Female Discus events.
In the Male Discus, Dion Warde set a new record of 47.32m eclipsing the old record of 42.04m set in 2011 by Adolphus Jones; while on the distaff side Stavia Lewis’ effort of 38.72 metres eclipsed Touvina Arrindell’s 19-year-old record.
The day also saw a number of junior athletes participating in exhibition races, as they prepare for various meets to be staged later this year.
Tesril Nisbett was also remembered at the meet when a Javelin was placed at the mark of her last throw.
