New Road Family Park behind schedule

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – PARLIAMENTARY REPRESENTATIVE for Constituency Number Two, the Hon. Marcella Liburd said that the New Road community might not be receiving its Family Park this month as was promised.

In an exclusive interview with this publication Liburd, who is also the Minister of Youth, Health, Culture and Gender Affairs, provided an update on the project, the sod for which was officially turned on January 22, 2 014.

With the promise that the park would be completed by April 2014 lingering in the minds of many, some expressed concerns to SKNVibes that it might not be delivered by that date.

Sometime nearing the ending of March, 2014, it was observed that containers which housed the equipment for the project were on the grounds and were being offloaded, with the mounting of the equipment beginning shortly thereafter.

Minister Liburd told SKNVibes that approximately 80 percent of the equipment has already been installed.

She said the installation of the equipment, which is being done by the Taiwanese with assistance from locals, is expected to be completed within a week’s time.

She also said that much work is left to be done including the construction of bathrooms, a parking area, the erection of a fence and landscaping, which would be undertaken by local contractors.

“I don’t think it will be delivered in April because the installation of the equipment would be finished probably by next week (this week). But after that, it is to put in the paved areas, put up the fence, build the bathrooms and the parking area to complete it.”

She however did not indicate when the New Road Family Park would be completed.

Funded by the Republic of China on Taiwan, the project costs US$500 000 and would feature a number of areas, which will include a gazebo, an area for toddlers, an outdoor gym and playground for school-aged children.

The facility, according to Taiwanese Ambassador His Excellency Miguel Tsao, would be internationally comparable.
