Darkie’s Nursery gets donation from Christophe Harbour Foundation & Sun Island

Press Release

The community outreach initiatives of one of the leading foundations in St. Kitts and Nevis continued here this week when the focus shifted to small local business enterprises caring for the nation’s very young.

Seven private nurseries and pre-schools on St. Kitts are this month benefiting from the generous support of the Christophe Harbour Foundation and local manufacturing company, Sun Island.

The first demonstration of this assistance came on Tuesday 28th April, 2015, when representatives of the Foundation handed over some much needed equipment to the owner and operator of Darkie’s Nursery or Day Care, located at Lime Kiln, in West Basseterre.

Speaking on behalf of the Christophe Harbour Foundation, Ms. Akela Browne explained that it was “Over one year ago, the owner and operator of Darkie’s Nursery, Ms. Shirlene Archibald, wrote to the Christophe Harbour Foundation, seeking our assistance in the purchase of a number of day beds and outdoor equipment.”

Browne added that “This request from Ms. Archibald sparked the interest of the Christophe Harbour Foundation and it was decided that not only would we support the Darkie’s Nursery but other similar enterprises…”

She listed these as Bradshaw’s Nursery- Dorset, Derryjoyce Nursery- Upper Cayon, Leonie’s Nursery in Middle Island, Lily of the Valley Preschool- Dorset, Rehoboth Learning Centre- Wades Garden, Waterfalls Nursery- Cayon.

In total 100 cots are to be presented to these 7 nurseries, including Darkie’s. Browne gave the assurance that similar handing over ceremonies will be undertaken in coming weeks.

“However, today our focus is on Darkie’s Nursery and we are here to present 10 cots to Ms. Archibald for the use of the children,” said the Foundation’s representative.

The cots are jointly funded by the Christophe Harbour Foundation and Sun Island. “Our Maintenance Department team at Christophe Harbour took the responsibility to construct the frames of the cots while Sun Island volunteered their services to put the fabric together,” added Browne.

Representative from Sun Island Abishek Nariani, said his company was delighted to be a part of the effort and when asked by Christophe Harbour Foundation to partner with them, the decision was made easy by their desire to help young people and institutions like the nursery.

While accepting the gift, Nursery owner, Shirlene Archibald thanked both entities for their generosity and timely donation, which she said was much needed to help provide greater care and comfort to the 26 children cared for by her three member staff.

Archibald said her nursery has been in operation for some 25 years and caters for children from as far as Dieppe Bay, with only a few having parents in the Basseterre area.
