Escalating crime wave creates fear and lack of confidence in PM Harris

By: SKNLPCU, Press Release

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (SKNLPCU) – Leader of the Opposition in St Kitts and Nevis, the Rt Hon. Dr Denzil L. Douglas said Wednesday the upsurge in gun violence which have left three young men dead and  several others nursing gunshot wounds has placed a strain on nurses, doctors and auxiliary staff at the main Joseph N France General Hospital and they are working in fear.

“At any moment, they believe that they can be invaded at the hospital by rival gangs seeking revenge. This is not good. Our investors and developers continue to ask the question, why is this still happening after the current (Timothy Harris) government in opposition had convinced them that this state of criminal activity would only be taking place in a Labour Administration, but not in a Unity Administration. They have become alarmed and have lost confidence and faith in this Administration,” Dr Douglas told listeners to Freedom FM 106.5 “Issues” programme.

Dr Douglas said the Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Dr Timothy Harris “is clueless as to what is happening in the country.”

“The Labour Administration in attempting to deal with the issue of crime consistently asked the people of our country to recognise that the crime situation was not a Douglas or government problem as the opposition was then saying. It was a serious societal problem. We continued to defend the position that it was unfair for Mark Brantley, Timothy Harris, Lindsay Grant, Shawn Richards and others blame the then Commissioner of Police that he was the one who was creating the environment and atmosphere for increased criminal activity,” said Dr Douglas.

He said Dr Walwyn had worked assiduously to assist in the dismantling of the existing gangs.
