BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Organizing Committee of the first ever Earth Day celebrations in the Federation has reported that last weekend’s clean-up campaign in St. Kitts was a success.

On Saturday and Sunday, last, the Committee along with over 500 participants cleaned up six locations around St. Kitts, including Port Zante.

Spokesperson for Earth Day SKN Jonel Powell, today (Apr. 18) explained at a press conference for the launching of Hydroponics in the Federation that over 1,000 bags of garbage were collected from the two-day exercise.

“We were successful in getting over 500 volunteers on six sites over two days. On Sunday we were able to do the Irish Town Bay Road, Newtown Bay Road and Port Zante. I think in excess of 1,300 bags of garbage were cleaned up during the two-day event.”

On Saturday, organizers and volunteers took to South Friar’s Bay, Banana Bay and Pump Bay in Sandy Point to undertake a clean-up exercise.

To this end, Powell pointed out that a large number of persons from various public and private sector agencies turned out to participate.

“We were able to get quite a lot of support and a lot of cleaning up. We had a number of persons from the Ministry of Education, Tourism, local businesses and we had different children from the various schools coming out and helping.”

Volunteers were given a token of appreciation from the Committees for their effort in assisting in the cleaning up of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Asked is this would be a one-off activity or other similar initiatives are planned by the Committee, Powell informed that the body is supportive of the cleaning up of the environment and they would see to its continuation.

He noted that one group that participated in the weekend’s clean-up called ‘McKnight on the Rise’ is known for t heir efforts in that area and they are partnering with the Tourism Ministry for Community Tourism, and they would continue with the cleaning exercise year round.

“They do regular clean-ups and we are going to support over the year,” he added.

Earth Week, which is being celebrate in the Federation under the theme ‘Trees for the Earth’, will continue with a number of educational programmes before culminating on Friday (Apr. 22) with a fair and the launching of the Hydroponics Project.
