Proud to have 49% of its workforce being females

Kingston, Jamaica Thursday, April 28, 2016 – In recognition of International Girls in ICT Day, Digicel is saluting its female employees across its operations and thanking them for their role in helping to make the company and by extension, the ICT sector, a success.

Led by the International Telecommunications Union, International Girls in ICT Day is aimed at creating a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field of information and communication technologies (ICTs).

In support of concerted global efforts to increase the number of women in technology and women in leadership, Digicel said these are two critical areas in which it is proudly making great strides. Across all its Caribbean, Central America and the Pacific markets, females account for 49% of Digicel’s workforce, 38% of its management team and more than 27% of its markets have a female CEO.

These statistics also support the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) 2015 survey in which eight Digicel Caribbean markets were ranked in the top 20 best places in the world where your boss is more likely to be a woman.

Kenneth McGrath, CEO Digicel Caribbean and Central America, credits these results to Digicel’s commitment to increasing the number of, and, empowering women in technology across all its operations. “As a brand, we recognise that gender equality in technology is a serious issue globally, but Digicel remains committed to playing our part in helping to bridge this gap.”

McGrath continues, “ICT is an exciting and rapidly changing sector with technology defining everything we do. So having an engaged environment that offers equal opportunities for everyone is the best way to future-proof our business and ensure that everyone can contribute effectively to the sustained success of Digicel and ultimately to the economy.”

To celebrate International Girls in ICT Day 2016, Digicel is embarking on several internal and external initiatives across its markets, including Open ICT Day for Girls as well as providing scholarship and internship opportunities for females studying ICT. Digicel also recently launched a three-phase Women in Leadership Learning Power series that includes an intense four-day leadership development workshop, executive coaching and a strict mentoring/mentee programme to empower women in technology.
