Davrone Connor wins car from KFC

Devrone Connor, his mother Merlene Connor and their new car!
By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOR decades, Merlene Connor of St. Pauls endured the onerous task of transporting her different-abled son – Devrone – on her back. Prayers were answered yesterday (Jan. 31) however, when Devrone won a brand new Kia car from KFC.

KFC held a raffle in commemoration of their 20th year of operation in St. Kitts, the grand prize for which was a new car.

Patrons of the establishment were required to submit entries over the course of a year and at the end of that period, all would have been placed in a container and one would be hand-selected. That process took place yesterday afternoon and Devrone’s name was on the selected entry.

Speaking with this publication, Devrone indicated that in January alone, he made approximately 15 entries and many more between May and December of last year.

As soon as we got there…

Devrone – 23 - accompanied his mother to the hair salon after which they made their way to the area where the draw was to take place. And he told SKNVibes that as he got there, he heard his name being called.

“I was speechless. I didn’t know what to say,” an elated Devrone said. He indicated that at the time of the interview, he was still shaking with joy at what had happened.

    Merlene’s prayer

The family – as was explained to this publication – lives in an area of St. Pauls which requires that they cross somewhat of a ghaut. And Merlene faithfully took on the challenge of carrying her son on her back in order for him to get to and from school and to others areas that he needed to visit.

Her story is well-known among persons across the Federation as a number of articles have been written about it.

Speaking with SKNVibes after the announcement of their win, Merlene said she already knew she would win the car. This is because, being a praying woman, she prayed and claimed the vehicle.

She said she continually confessed that the car was hers, ensuring that whenever she would have done business at KFC, she would indicate to the cashiers that she would win the car. And now, the car is hers!

Remembering all the hardship his mother endured, Devrone said he is happy that his family won the car, as it would ease her burden.

With Merlene working on attaining her driver’s license, Devrone’s sister drove the vehicle to their St. Pauls home.

After news of his win spread, many took to social media to congratulate Devrone, with some declaring that they cannot think of a more deserving individual.

    Congratulations Davrone and family!
