Positively Inclined founder sees reason to smile despite ensuing epidemic of crime and violence in St. Kitts & Nevis

By: Positively Inclined, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 01, 2017 (Positively Inclined): With six months behind and more work ahead, Positively Inclined founder, Ervin Welsh, shares his optimism about the Federation, with respect to seeing crime and violence remedied.

Six months ago, Ervin took the decision to stop working on his company and focus squarely on the issue of crime and violence. Since then, a large portion of his time has been spent writing the manuscript of a book called Decoding Deviance which will be made available, upon completion, to the public for free. The book is the first step in Positively Inclined’s response strategy focused firstly on enabling others to understand the problem before attempting to address it. Ervin argues that while there are calls for all hands to be on deck, nobody really understands what that means and some of the interventions thought solutions are merely problems themselves.

“Slavoj Zizek, a Slovenian philosopher, in a video titled ‘Don’t Act. Just think.’ makes the case for spending more time in consideration of a problem before acting on it. The title says it all! We like to see movement, we like to hear about grand plans and that ‘something’ is being done but ‘something’ will most often amount to nothing where there is no understanding”, Ervin said. “People are living in fear and growing more cynical but I smile, I smile despite the fact that contrary to many, I think what we have a central role to play in its resolution. If you think about it, I should be the saddest person then.

I smile because while people believe we’ve done all we can do and we need to get “radical”, I say we haven’t even begun yet and we should redefine radical. You can take as much medication as you want but if you don’t know what you’re treating you’ll never get better and will likely get worse. Some people think there has been enough talking, I say we haven’t begun to talk, some say we’ve tried everything and run through the list but all we have is an issue of crime and violence on steroids. My prescription is Understanding, take some Understanding, get some rest and you’ll wake up smiling too, you’ll realize not only what the problems are but how to address them”, he went on.

While the past months for Positively Inclined involved little so far as traditional “action” is concerned, Ervin has penned an over three hundred page manuscript focusing on the factors we overlook that contribute to crime and violence and the things we know contribute but don’t understand how, why or to what extent. On his website http://positivelyinclined.com he has begun uploading thoughts on an array of social issues which are at a day’s end the contributing factors to the epidemic. His work during this period also included a dissection of the idea of love and an analysis of the consequences of our not understanding what it is; it also included social impact consultancy, the recording and publishing of his Rhythmic Thoughts (poetry) on a collection of subjects which can be heard via his website and while these are the focus of his work, the largest portion of his time is spent in thought.

“I am not asking anything of anyone that I am not doing myself. Understanding why we are the way we are both, as they say, the “good” and “bad” among us and from it conceptualizing a better social construct is my work, I ask only that people pursue understanding as well because change and specifically change for the better, can only come when we actively participate in shaping our collective reality”, Ervin commented.

He continued, “ ‘All hands on deck’ sounds good but explain it… I challenge you to ask that question of anybody who utters that cliche and see how quickly they reveal no understanding behind it. It is not a shame that people do not understand what is wrong with society – the things that lead to the problems we’re wrestling with today, the shame is people don’t care and worse, they think they do.”

Decoding Deviance is part of the body of work of which Positively Inclined’s Crime Response Framework dubbed “Begin Within“, is comprised. In June 2016 Ervin, a Kittitian born and based entrepreneur and founder of Positively Inclined, submitted a proposal to the Ministry of National Security regarding said framework. He didn’t receive a response but in weeks that followed, he took the decision to forego work on his company to focus on the escalating issue of crime and violence.
