Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 16, 2017 (RSCNPF): Members of the Forensic Services Unit and investigators from the Violent Crimes Unit (VCU), Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Special Victims Unit attended a one day Forensic refresher seminar on Tuesday (February 14) at the Police Training Centre.
The training was in partnership with Cellmark Forensic Services a UK based company that provides analysis services to Police Services worldwide.
The one day refresher was conducted by company representative Ms Caroline Eames and focussed on the Benefits of Forensics, Role of Forensic and Forensics Technicians in Investigations. Emphasis was paid to the collection of DNA evidence, offences involving firearms and sexual offences.
Head of the Forensic Services Unit Mr. Narace Ramnarine said, "the training was timely, and it provided an opportunity for our team to hear about advances in the field, and to better understand the role of our provider Cellmark in support our efforts."
He further stated, "having just taken over management of the department the training session highlighted for and reinforced for my initial impression that the team here, they are very capable."
Assistant Commissioner of Police and Head of the Crime Directorate, Mr. Andre Mitchell commenting on the session said, "it was important for our Forensic Services team and our investigators to hear from Cellmark. It is critical that we understand that we must each and every time follow the established procedures of crime scene management, evidence collection and preservation to ensure the best results from testing, and Cellmark clearly reinforced that in the remarks to the team. It was also encouraging the good comments made by them about our team."
The one day awareness was at no cost to the Police Service.
