BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Nevis Sixth Form College, an arm of the Charlestown Secondary School, walked away from the 45th Leeward Islands Debating Competition (LIDC) last evening (Feb. 26) as the victor.
Watched by a near-capacity crowd at the Nevis Performing Arts Center (NEPAC), Nevis successfully proposed the Moot: The atrocity of our age is the billions of dollars spent on sports.
The two-member team of Rol J Williams and Gabriella Brantley defeated the duo from Anguilla, Kelcia Harris and Princess Brown, 578 - 489.
Brantley grabbed the Best Speaker prize as teammate K-Jel Smithen copped the Best Overall speaker award.
The four-night competition saw Nevis opening with a first round victory over Montserrat 683 - 489 and a semifinals defeat of Anguilla 701 -656.
St. Kitts, on the other hand, lost to Antigua 540 - 607.
Principal at the institution, Edson Elliott, via local media House THG Network, congratulated all parties involved in properly preparing the team.
“I feel good that we have won the competition,” he exclaimed.
Jokingly, the principal noted that it is viewed that the host territory is often times crowned winner. He expressed however, his satisfaction at the way in which team Nevis performed.
