    ST. GEORGES Grenada, July 18th 2011 - Former Prime Minister of Grenada, Dr. The Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell was recognized for his vision to place Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at the centre of the development agenda for Grenada and the rest of the Caribbean.

     


    Speaking at the ceremony establishing a regional broadband network connecting all CARICOM countries, Dr. Mitchell was acknowledged for his contribution and for encouraging other CARICOM leaders to put the necessary regional mechanism in place to develop a Regional ICT strategy that will propel the Caribbean to becoming an information and knowledge society.

     


    The Caribbean Knowledge and Learning Network (CKLN), is but one company born out of Dr. Mitchell’s vision. CKLN is responsible for Caribnet, a broadband fiber optic network configured to connect, within the Caribbean, all tertiary institutions, hospitals, schools, government agencies and CARICOM institutions. The project was initiated by a US$ 6.3 Million dollar contract with LIME signed in Grenada on July 16th, 2011. Caribnet will also connect Caribbean institutions to like institutions in Europe, USA, Latin America, Africa and Asia.
     

     

    The signing of this historic contract brings to fruition Dr. Mitchell’s vision of creating access and opportunity for more students in Grenada to utilize higher education opportunities that their home communities do not offer
