BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE 2012 Aquavita Cheerleading Competition, which is held in conjunction with the Inter-School Championships, will be staged at 7:00 this evening (Mar. 23) at the Silver Jubilee Stadium in Bird Rock between two high schools.

The Cayon High’s Green Valley Falcons and the Basseterre High’s Blue and Golden Eagles are the only schools that will be competing in the cheerleading competition, which many patrons and supporters are expecting to see the ‘A’ game of each competitor.

The winning school will receive a Western Union-sponsored cash prize of EC$1 800 and the Executive Cup, while EC$1 300 will be presented to the runner-up.

Although it is unfortunate that only two schools are competing this year, the organisers are still expecting the general public to come out in their numbers to support the competitors.

Cheerleading Competition Organising Committee Member Julie Martin indicated that there were various reasons that hindered the other schools from participating.

She said that last year’s winners, ‘Washy Wildcats’ from the Washington Archibald High School, and the Immaculate Conception Catholic School said “up front” that they were unable to participate in the competition while the other schools dropped out along the way.

Some of the reasons given by the schools for their non-participation included lack of commitment from students, choreography issues and cost.

“At first, the schools were coming to the meetings but for various reasons they wouldn’t be able to participate.

“The competition is very demanding and we’re happy that Cayon High is able to return after being out of the competition for a few years. And although two schools are participating, both of them are very passionate about being in the competition,” Martin said.

According to a release from the St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Athletic Association (SKNAAA), the cheerleaders would serve as a support group for their team entering the SKNAAA Inter-School Athletics Competition.

The release noted that the squad should strive to boost school spirit, display cheerleading skills, promote good sportsmanship and develop positive crowd involvement.

The scoring will be based on fundamentals, choreography, projection, overall presentation and chant.

The judges are said to be competent individuals who are knowledgeable about the art of cheerleading and choreography and are very capable of making unbiased evaluations.
