    -       Players came back bigger, stronger and faster in Suriname

Tuesday 28th April 2015 – Suriname: The Digicel Kickstart Clinics continued to deliver on its promise of developing aspiring young footballers with the news that three returning players from last year’s programme were picked to represent Suriname at the Digicel Academy later this year.

Chelsea FC Foundation Senior International Football Development Officer, David Monk, said; “The Clinic was a huge success in Suriname. The footballers were disciplined and understood every facet of the game. As the defending three on three champion, they will be a force to be reckoned with and should defend their title well. We had seven returning players from last year’s Clinic and the chosen three were a part of that group – a true testament to the work being done at the Clinics.”

According to Monk, the Suriname players were technically sound and efficient, they passed the ball well and were impressive in their movement on and off the ball. Monk said; “I was impressed with their natural movement around the pitch. They gave each other support when needed and could pick out a pass as soon as the lanes opened up – it was a beauty to watch.”

Known for their attacking prowess, the players were tactical and methodical in their approach to moving forward and were clinical when in front of the goal – striking the ball with power and accuracy. In defence, they communicated, were composed and in sync with each other - which will make them hard to beat.

The Digicel Kickstart programme has proven to be a wonderful opportunity for aspiring young footballers to showcase their skills and talents for world-class Chelsea FC coaches and scouts for their respective national teams as players were also recruited into the national programmes through the Clinics. The Chelsea FC coaches also instill a level of professionalism and commitment in the players that fosters growth and development on and off the pitch.

The coaches also took part in a coaching session with children from the local Special Olympics and special needs organisation and showed them new techniques they can use to improve their game. Monk said; “I had a great time with the kids. It is always great to engage with and give back to the wider community wherever you can.”
